Grade 6 Collaborative Art Project.

We were initially inspired by Tongan Tapa patterns.  We then began looking at Maori tattoo designs and other Polysnesian motifs.  Students also designed their own personal motifs using the geometrical influences of the Tongan patterns.

Grade 5 Lino Cut Prints Inspired by artist Alick Tipoti.

We looked closely at Alick Tipoti's artworks and identified many components.
We could see an animal and other animals and figures such as humans, food and eggs that would be part of the animals experience.  We could also see geometric patterns and other lines and designs around the figures.  Some of these may represent water or land or just be purely for design purposes.
Snail surrounded by straight line design.
Students chose an animal from their local environment.

Rabbit surrounded by stylised grass.
Around the animal they featured designs of things that the animal would eat or things that would occur in that animals environment or life-cycle.

Spider and web.
After drawing their designs in sketchbooks, students drew their design onto lino.

Deer and bushes.
Cutting out the lino designs using the cutting tools was difficult at first, but they soon got the hang of it.

Rabbit eating a carrot.
We achieved some really neat finishes.

Fish in the sea with its eggs below.
After a few practices of printing, students began to mix their own colours.

Rabbit surrounded by stylised grass.
They each had several good quality prints to take home.
